Desperate Ohio Homeowner Destroys House

A ,am from Moscow , Ohio has destroyed his house when the RiverHills Bank was about to take over his 350,000$ house for a debt of 160,000$ . The man was been in fight with the bank for quite a while now. He has offered them 170,000$ to clear the debts , but the bank was insistent as they said they will receive more if they auction it on foreclosure.
The man warned the bank that he will destroy the house , but bank turned their ear away from that also. So he arrived at his solution , a bulldozer and one afternoon of demolition. He said he wanted to give the bank the way the hill was before he built his house. Now that his business in Amelia is also set for public auction , he might even destroy that building also.

The man wanted to prove a point to the banks who just take away all that a person posses on basis of closure of their debts. But will the banks learn the lesson? Only time will tell that.

South Africa cancels Airbus deal

South Africa has cancelled a multi-billion dollar contract for eight military aircraft with Airbus, citing escalating costs and delivery delays.

The deal for the A400M planes was signed a number of years ago, when the proposed cost of the planes was significantly less.

A government spokesman said the cost was now too great given its more limited resources during the downturn.

The A400M has suffered technical problems and has been delayed.

It was due to fly for the first time in March.

New contracts

"The cost escalation would have placed an unaffordable burden on the taxpayer at a time when the national [finances] are under pressure due to the economic downturn," said South African government spokesman Themba Maseko.

He said the planes would now cost 47bn rand ($6.2bn; £3.7bn), compared with 6.4bn rand when they were ordered.

Airbus said it was "surprised" by the decision.

"We regret this all the more since it comes at a time when the programme is making major progress towards a test flight before the end of the year," it added.

The A400M received a boost this summer, when seven European countries pledged to continue supporting the troubled plane.

Ministers from Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Turkey and the UK said they hoped to agree a new contract for the plane by the end of the year.

The project was launched in 2003 as a replacement for the main Nato military transport aircraft, the US-built Lockheed Martin Hercules.

Australia's currency
The Australian dollar is at its highest in a year as confidence increases about the global economy.

The currency rose 0.5% to AU$ 0.86 against the US dollar. The Australian currency is up 21.5% this year.

Investors have been more positive about a global economic recovery, and the Australian currency has benefited from a rise in commodity prices.

Australia is one of the few developed countries to have avoided falling into a recession.

Chinese demand for its iron ore and other raw materials has also boosted Australian exports.

Regulators eye Google book deal

US anti-trust regulators are to investigate a $125m (£76.4m) deal Google has made with book publishers to settle copyright issues, reports say.

The settlement compensates copyright holders and gives Google a share of online book sales and advertisements.

The deal "warrants further inquiry", US Deputy Assistant Attorney General William Cavanaugh said in a letter filed to the New York District Court.

Some fear the deal could make Google the main source for many online books.

"The US has reviewed public comments expressing concern that aspects of the settlement agreement may violate the Sherman [Anti-Trust] Act," Mr Cavanaugh said.

"At this preliminary stage, the US has reached no conclusions as to the merits of those concerns or more broadly what impact the settlement may have on competition," he added.

Right to read

In October 2008, Google reached a deal with the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers.

The search engine agreed to pay $125m to create a Book Rights Registry, where authors and publishers can register works and receive compensation.

Google can also digitise orphan works - works whose rights-holders are unknown. Some fear the settlement could prevent other companies from entering the digital book market.

"The Department of Justice and several state attorneys general have contacted us to learn more about the impact of the settlement, and we are happy to answer their questions," Google said in a statement.

"It is important to note that this agreement is non-exclusive and if approved by the court stands to expand access to millions of books in the US."

Jeff Bezos, chief executive of Amazon.com, has previously expressed concerns about the settlement and has said he believes "it needs to be revisited"

India, US agree to increase civil aviation cooperation

India and the United States have agreed to increase their level of cooperation in theaviation sector, including its modernization, and to meet the challenges in view of its rapid expansion.

The decision in this regard was taken following a series of meetings of visiting Indian delegation led by the Civil Aviation Secretary Madhavan Nambiar with members of the Obama

Administration.

During the meetings, the two sides discussed the future direction of the bilateral cooperation, said the Indian

Embassy in a statement.

The two countries agreed to work towards making Aviation Cooperation Program (ACP), signed in June 2007, more productive for India in its efforts to modernise the sector and meet challenges of rapid expansion in terms of safety, technology and communication support and air space management, the statement said.

It was agreed that the next Indo-US Aviation Summit would be held in the US in December 2009.

An agreement was also signed between the US Trade & Development Agency and Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India to fund projects under the US-India ACP, besides reviewing the progress of the Open Skies Agreement, 2005.

Over 2004-07, India imported more than USD 11 billion worth of aviation-related products from the US.

Industry grows 1.4% in April; solid show power generation

Industries
Giving early signs of economic recovery, industrial production grew 1.4 per cent in April after contraction for months together since September when global financial crisis deepened.

However, certain crucial sectors like consumer non-durables, including processed food products and capital goods posted negative growth.

Processed food items declined by a whopping 34 per cent.

Also, 1.4 per cent growth in factory output is no match for the 6.2 per cent expansion it clocked in the same month last year.

Nonetheless, slowdown in industrial growth, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), appears to be bottoming out.

Provisional figures showed industrial contraction for almost every month since Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in mid-September last year which deepened the global financial meltdown.

"We have bottomed up and we are on a path of recovery," economic think-tank National Institute for Public Finance and Policy's Director Govinda Rao said.

However, the good news on industrial production failed to enthuse the stock markets with benchmark equity index Sensex shedding nearly 153 points at 15,355 points at mid-session.

The biggest surprise in IIP data was the electricity generation which grew by 7.1 per cent in April against 1.4 per

cent in the same month a year ago.

Is it wise to spent 100 million euros on a player ?????

Ronaldo
Real Madrid in a span of days spent 56 million pounds on Kaka and agreed a deal worth 80 million pounds for Christiano Ronaldo . Is it worth to pay such high amounts for a single player ? That too on time of recession when the number of unemployment is on rise and people are spending with strings tied around their wallet ..

Whatever be the reason that the Spanish outfit is paying such heavy sums on players is ridiculous and their shopping list is not complete yet . Some new players will find a place on their hit list and they will publicly go for the player like what happened to United

It is the time for Michael Platini to act rather than accusing English clubs . For the last one year Madrid was after Ronaldo and Platini was trying to regulate the transfer activities of English clubs . With the amount they are spending on a single player is more than the budget of many nations it is time for somebody to act

World Bank to invest USD 45 bln in infrastructure

The World Bank said on Friday that it would invest USD 45 billion in infrastructure over the next three years to lay a foundation for a "rapid recovery" from the global economic crisis.

Robert Zoellick, president of the 185-nation development lender, said in a statement that the investments "can provide the platform for job creation, sustainable economic growth and overcoming poverty, and help jump-start a recovery from the crisis."

The World Bank said a new Infrastructure Recovery and Assets Platform (INFRA) will provide USD 45 billion in infrastructure lending over the next three years, an increase of USD 15 billion over the three years preceding the crisis.

The bank also announced an increase in its support for agriculture to USD 12 billion over the next two years, from USD four billion in 2008, "to help ensure vital food security."

"Increases over this two-year period include a near doubling in agricultural support to Africa from USD 450 million to USD 800 million, and to Latin America from USD 250 million to USD 400 million, while supporting more than USD one billion in new projects in agriculture and rural development in South Asia," it said.

Mexico granted $47bn IMF credit

The International Monetary Fund has formally approved a $47bn (£32bn) line of credit for Mexico.

It is the first country to get the credit under a new fast track scheme designed to help developing nations cope with the global economic crisis.

Several Eastern European countries are also seeking similar credit lines.

Mexico has said it does not intend to use the money, but applied for it as a precaution in the event of further deterioration in global markets.

Mexico, which sells 80% of its exports to the United States, has been hit hard by the global recession.

Industrial output last month fell by over 13%, the sharpest decline in 14 years.

The Mexican peso has also been on a generally downward path, falling around 20% against the dollar during the last year.

Applying for an IMF loan was once seen as a sign of desperation for developing countries.

News that the lender of last resort was stepping in would often be the final blow to their struggling economies.

But the Mexican government and the IMF are keen to stress that that there is no stigma attached to this particular type of loan, which is designed to support countries seen as strong economic performers during the global credit crisis.

Since President Felipe Calderon publicly announced his country was requesting the credit just before the G20 summit in London earlier this month, the peso and the Mexican stock market have strengthened.

Nokia to cut 1,700 jobs worldwide

Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, has announced plans to shed 1,700 jobs worldwide as part of a major cost-cutting drive.

Phone sales have been hit hard by the economic downturn and the company said in January that it would cut costs by 700m euros ($910m; £647m).

The job cuts will be across a number of departments, including marketing, development and support functions.

"Nokia continues to seek savings in operational expenses," the group said.

'Big numbers'

"Altogether, these plans will affect approximately 1,700 employees globally. Where applicable, Nokia will start consultations with employee representatives about these plans," it added.

Nokia employs about 125,000 people globally.

"The number of employees we have to reduce is 1,700," confirmed Arja Suominen at Nokia.

She said about 700 jobs will go in Finland, with the US and the UK the next hardest hit.

"We are making very small changes in a large number of countries, but when you count them together you come to very big numbers," she explained.

Further details will be announced once negotiations with employees have begun, she added.

For the final three months of 2008, Nokia made a profit of 576m euros, down almost 69% from 1.84bn euros during the same period in 2007.

The company blamed the poor results on the global economic slowdown that is affecting people's ability to buy new mobile phones.

Northern Rock makes £1.4bn loss

Northern Rock has confirmed it made a loss of £1.4bn in 2008.

The bank also said it was ahead of target in repaying the £26.9bn loan from the government, having reduced the amount it owed by £18bn to £8.9bn.

It also confirmed its plans to support government policy to increase mortgage lending, saying it would offer £14bn of new lending.

"Northern Rock has made good progress against the business plan objectives laid out in March 2008," it said.

G7 pledges to avoid protectionism

Leading industrial countries have pledged to avoid protectionism as they battle the global economic crisis.

Finance ministers at a G7 meeting in Italy said raising barriers to free trade would make the downturn worse.

Hours earlier, the US Congress approved an $787bn economic recovery plan that includes a 'Buy American' clause.

G7 ministers said stabilising the world economy and financial markets was their priority. They said they would work together to support growth and jobs.

The 'Buy American' clause has raised fears that protectionism could be growing in the world's largest economy.

But in a statement after the meeting, new US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner dismissed such concerns.

"All countries need to sustain a commitment to open trade and investment policies which are essential to economic growth and prosperity," he said.

Ministers also called for urgent reform to the International Monetary Fund, saying the crisis had shown weaknesses in the world financial system.

"We agree that a reformed IMF, endowed with additional resources, is crucial to respond effectively and and flexibly to the current crisis," the ministers' statement said.

Other points included:

* Praise for recent economic moves by China;
* Help for banks; and
* The need for a speedy end to the Doha talks on world trade

The G7 comprises the US, the UK, Japan, Germany, France, Italy and Canada.

The BBC's correspondent at the meeting says it was billed as a meeting to discuss the broad issues of the economic crisis, not to decide major policy initiatives - and that's what it was.

Britain's Chancellor of Exchequer (Finance Minister), Alistair Darling, said it was a stepping stone to a meeting in London in April of the G20 group, which also includes big emerging economies such as China and India.
